What is Rebreather Diving?

A closed circuit rebreather (CCR) simply recycles the gas that we normally exhale and by adding more Oxygen and removing Carbon Dioxide, keeps the optimum breathing mixture available through all points of the dive.

I don’t want to be a tec diver – what benefits would there be?

When divers hear about the benefits of diving CCR, they are always surprised. Warm breathing gas slows cooling during dives. Moist breathing gas means less risk of dehydration. Silent operation leads to closer interaction with marine life. Because bubbles are only released on ascent, fishes treat you as one of them! Since the optimum Oxygen content is maintained by the machine – you always have the best Nitrox mix for any part of your dive. Decompression is optimised as the Nitrogen part of the breathing gas is kept to the minimum level for the current depth.

It sounds complicated – I’d like to try it, but think it may be difficult. What are my options?

Diving CCR is actually a fully automated process – it’s very straightforward… You can either try CCR – with an informative introduction to the equipment and how it works followed by a carefully supervised dive from one of our house reefs… or simply enrol on a CCR diving course, such as TDI’s Air Diluent CCR diver. Many recreational and technical courses are modular, and CCR courses are no exception. The first level is similar to an advanced open water certification, but imagine being able to stay at 20 metres for up to 3 hours without ANY decompression!
